The notorious nightclubs of the Entertainment District are finally being subject to their own batch of regulations, following months of braying from the King-Spadina Residents Association. Noise from club sound systems and souped-up vehicles throbbing through loft condo walls, combined with the fights, filth and congestion that fill the area each weekend, caught the ear of outgoing councillor Olivia Chow – who drafted a proposal that elicited an instant backlash from club owners. Based on the weekend’s Star and Globe reports, they object to the obligation for metal detectors and having to employ one security guard for every 50 patrons. More liability insurance, trash bins and sound-proofing will also be required. And since these rules apply across town – including new complaint-prone Kensington Market club Supermarket – they’re meant to address the fact that most places cranking out music until 2 a.m. and beyond are most likely to be frequented by people fond of hurling expletives into the night air, smacking one another in the head, and excreting every colour of human waste onto nearby lawns. Meanwhile, the New York Post’s Page Six furthers the story that deported NYC club kingpin Peter Gatien will be mounting his comeback in Toronto – despite reports that he’d use his Native American blood to reclaim residency stateside – with plans to open a 50,000 square foot club called Circa, evidently on the premises of bankrupt debacle Lucid (now in different hands than what was told by the latest Toronto Life). Gatien, the guru of the scene depicted in the flick Party Monster, beat several drug conspiracy and racketeering charges, but confessing to tax evasion got his Green Card yanked.

It’s about time the city stopped pretending that the big nightclubs didn’t exist and started enacting rules specifically tailored to them.
This can only help the industry, as the smart operators will flourish and the fly by nighters will disappear instead of giving everyone a bad name.
The Chow induced moritorium was a terrible example of misguided judgement. Now that everyone is aware of what is happenning, one city councillor can’t hold a massive industry hostage.
